To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average annual cost of employing(a) a hospital consultant, (b) a senior registrar, (c) a registrar (career), (d) a registrar (SHO3), (e) a senior house officer, (f) a house officer, (g) a qualified nurse and (h) an ambulance paramedic. [16696]

[holding answer 30 March 1995]: In Scotland, the average cost of employing (a) a hospital consultant was £63,862, (b) a senior registrar was £42,671, (c) a registrar (career) was £36,038, (e) a senior house officer was £30,052, (f) a house officer was £21,046, (g) a qualified nurse was £20,555.

The information has been calculated over a 12-month period based on the nine months from 1 April to 31 December 1994. It cannot be broken down to show the average cost of a registrar (SHO3) or an ambulance paramedic.
