To 31 August 1994 Customs and Excise prosecuted 289 individuals for the illegal importation of alcohol and tobacco from other EU countries. The courts acquitted in two cases although one of these is the subject of an appeal by Customs.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the rate of excise duty, VAT or other tax on(a) wine, (b) spirits and (c) beer in each EU country; and what is the difference in each case for United Kingdom levels.
