HC Deb 17 October 1994 vol 248 c3W
Rev. Martin Smyth

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the amount per pound which would need to be added to income tax to raise a sum equivalent to the amount raised by prescription charges for the national health service.

Mr. Aitken

The expected income from prescription charges in 1994–95, including receipts from the sale of prepayment certificates, is approximately £350 million, for the United Kingdom as a whole. This is equivalent to about one fifth of the yield of 1p on the basic rate of income tax.
