HL Deb 10 October 1994 vol 557 c101WA
Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in light of Baroness Cumberlege's answer of 25th July, they will take steps to prevent the import of Spanish iceberg lettuce as a precaution against dysentery; and, if not, why not.

Baroness Cumberlege

The European Commission is in contact with the Spanish authorities to establish the cause of the outbreak of dysentery due to Shigella sonnei infection in Britain and other member states.

The Spanish authorities have been asked what preventive measures they have taken so that the Commission can reassure other member states and restore public confidence in Spanish produce.

In the "suspect" production areas in Spain, special control measures have been adopted until further results are received from the investigation.
