To ask the Secretary of State for Health what action her Department is taking to encourage children to brush their teeth.

Mr. Malone

The Department has published an oral health strategy for England which sets a number of objectives relating to the further reduction in caries in children. Carrying forward dental health education is a matter for health authorities. Copies of the strategy are available in the Library.

The Department has made available £1 million for oral health education for 1994–95. Thirty-six proposals have been approved. A second tranche is currently being considered.
