To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of staff in post in central Government Departments at 1 October 1994.

Mr. Aitken

On 1 October 1994 there were 523,981 permanent staff in post in central Government, the lowest for 55 years. This is a decrease of 9,370 during the last six months and more than 40,000 since April 1992.

An analysis showing staff in post by Department has been placed in the Library.
