To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what progress has been made on the involvement of the private sector in the Northern line.

Mr. Norris

London Underground Ltd. is holding a competition for the supply of privately financed trains for the Northern line. It is currently evaluating the bids which it received early in September, and a decision is expected later this year.
