To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many factory inspectors were employed in England and Wales in each year since 1979.

The following table gives(a) the total number of factory inspectors employed on inspection duties, based in the Health and Safety Executive's area offices in England and Wales and (b) the total numbers of factory inspectors employed in HSE in Great Britain.
