To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is his latest estimate of the number of people claiming benefit fraudulently.

In 1992–93, there were 3,967 cases of social security fraud detected involving savings of some £10.6 million which is 0.5 per cent., of the total amount of benefit paid. There is, however, no reliable estimate Of the number of fraudulent claims not detected.
