HL Deb 17 May 1994 vol 555 cc3-4WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What efforts have been made to bring the international arms trade under United Nations control and whether they support such efforts.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We are aware of no such efforts. We would not support the imposition of multilateral arms export controls by the UN. Arms export policy should remain the responsibility of national governments. However, we are actively promoting responsible policies, and transparency in the arms trade, for example through the UN Register of Conventional Arms.
