To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of public expenditure debt interest represented(a) in 1979 and (b) currently.

§ Mr. Portillo
General Government gross debt interest payments accounted for 10½ per cent. of general Government expenditure in 1979–80. The figure in 1992–93 was 6¾ per cent.
