§ Ms CorstonTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the number of applications for the disability working allowance, and the number accepted, for each month since the allowance was introduced; and what percentage of people with disabilities of working age this represents.
§ Mr. ScottThe available information is in the table. The survey of disability conducted by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, based on fieldwork conducted in 1985–1988 and published in 1989, suggested that there were around 2 million disabled people between the ages of 16 and 65. However many of these would be unlikely to qualify for disability working allowance because they were only slightly disabled or because their disability would prevent them from undertaking any work.
