To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many inmates have escaped from prison in England and Wales during each of the last five years; and how many of such escapees are still at large.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Butler to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 24 March 1994: The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the Office, to reply to your recent Question asking for details of the number of inmates who have escaped from prison in England and Wales during each of the last 5 years and the number of such escapees still at large. The following table lists the number of prisoners who have escaped and the number still unlawfully at large:
