To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many contracts his Department has had with consultants; and what has been the total cost in each of the last five years.

My Department has commissioned a total of 339 consultancy assignments since the start of the 1989–90 financial year. The total cost in each of the last five years was given in my reply to the hon. Member for Oldham, West (Mr. Meacher) on 21 February 1994, at columns51–52.
