To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to introduce statutory water quality objectives on English rivers.

[holding answer 21 March 1994]: Regulations are to be made soon to set in place a national scheme for classifying water quality. This will open the way for consultation to start on the first batch of proposals for statutory water quality objectives.
