To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many paramedics are employed by the London ambulance service; and how many have been transferred to work in stations in(a) south-east London and (b) Lewisham.

The London ambulance service currently employs around 400 paramedics. It plans to train more than 750 further paramedics by the end of 1996.

Operational decisions on the deployment of staff are made by individual ambulance services in the light of local circumstances. The hon. Member may wish to contact Mr. Martin Gorham, chief executive of the London ambulance service, for futher information.
