To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement about fraud and corruption in local government.

§ Mr. Curry
It is the responsibility of local authorities themselves, both members and officers, to take measures to prevent and detect fraud and corruption in their affairs. The Audit Commission's recent report on probity in the public sector concluded thatprobity in local government is generally in good order". There is no room for complacency, however; fraud and corruption are always to be condemned, wherever they occur.
