HL Deb 10 March 1994 vol 552 c111WA
Lord Tebbit

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is in the public interest that no action be taken to require Greece to honour its commitment as a member state of the European Union in regard to Macedonia.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We share the Commission's concerns about the legality of the Greek action. We have strongly urged the Greeks to lift these measures. This is a trade matter and so it is for the Commission as guardians of the treaty to decide whether to initiate infraction proceedings against Greece before the European Court of Justice.

Lord Tebbit

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Greek blocade of Macedonia is in breach of or in conformity with the obligations of Greece under the Treaty of Rome as amended and the Treaty of Union.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The Commission have written to Greece expressing serious concerns about the legality of the Greek measures in respect of the European Community's Customs Union, the common commercial policy and the functioning of the internal market. We share these concerns and have strongly urged the Greek Government to lift its measures.
