To ask the President of the Board of Trade how much his Department spends on child care; on what provision the sum is spent; how many children receive the child care; and if he will make a statement about child care.

[holding answer 7 March 1994]: My Department aims to promote a culture where managers are understanding of the need for staff to balance work and child care responsibilities and is committed to exploring child care schemes which give value for money.

For the financial year 1993–94 the DTI, excluding its executive agencies has an allocated budget of £18,000 for the provision of school holiday playscheme places. Up to a maximum of 32 places are available on any one day that the playscheme is in operation.
