To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what research his Department has commissioned on the relationship between immigrant labour and unemployment.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The labour force survey provides information on the number of immigrants unemployed in the United Kingdom, according to the International Labour Office definition of unemployment.

Information form the LFS can be obtained from the Library via computer link.

In 1981 the Policy Studies Institute published "Unemployment and Racial Minorities". This work was commissioned by the Department of Employment and the Manpower Services Commission.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what research has been conducted by his Department on the impact which immigrant labour has had on the labour market since 1964.

Information on the number and occupation of immigrants in the United Kingdom labour market since 1984 is collected in the labour force survey. This can be obtained from the Library via computer link. The Employment Gazette is also available from the Library.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what research his Department has cornmissioned on the extent to which refugees and immigrants, other than those for whom an employer has a work permit, are successful in the labour market, and the extent to which language ability affects their employment prospects.

The Employment Department has commissioned no research on this issue.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what research his Department has carried out on whether immigrant labour has displaced, or com-plemented, the indigenous work force in different sectors of employment.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what research has been conducted on the occupational attainment of immigrants and refugees in the British labour market compared with the occupational level in their previous country of residence.

The Department has not conducted and is not aware of any studies on this issue.
