To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners from(a) Gwynedd, (b) Clwyd and (c) Powys are currently serving custodial sentences in prisons in England.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many prisoners from (a) Gwynedd, (b) Clwyd and (c) Powys are currently serving custodial sentences in prisons in England.

The available information is for the county of the sentencing court and the latest provisional statistics are for 31 December 1993. On that date the numbers of prisoners held in Prison Service Establishments in England and Wales who had been sentenced by courts in Gwynedd, Clwyd and Powys were 106, 205 and 39 respectively.
