The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many (a) men and (b) women are presently serving sentences in prison for the non-payment of fines.On 31 January 1994 there were 540 fine defaulters (518 males and 22 females) in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales.
