§ Mr. Alex CarlileTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales what were the average cereal yields achieved on farms in(a) less favoured areas and (b) non-less favoured areas in Wales for each year from 1986 to 1990, excluding the highest and lowest values; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RedwoodEstimates of cereal yields are derived from a sample survey, the cereals production survey and from the June agicultural census, both conducted jointly by MAFF and the Welsh Office. The sample survey is not specifically designed for results to be produced at below an all-Wales level and so the average yields are subject to a greater margin of error than for Wales as a whole. The average values shown in the final row of the table are estimated to be accurate to within plus or minus 20 per cent. The requested information is shown in the table. I have set out the position in England for the purpose of comparison.
§ Mr. RedwoodI know of none at 15 June 1994.
