To ask the Secretary of State for Education what proportion of young people achieved five or more GCSE passes at grades A to C last year; and what was the equivalent figure for 1989.

Some 41 per cent. of 15-year-olds in England achieved five or more GCSEs at grade A to C in 1993, compared with 33 per cent. in 1989.
