§ Mr. MealeTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans she has to restrict the numbers of times animals, except for calves, can be presented for sale in any month.
§ Mr. SoamesThe restrictions on the sale of calves, under the Welfare of Animals at Markets Order 1990, were introduced in response to specific concerns about the hawking of very young calves from market to market. The order was amended last year to give added protection for young lambs and goats in markets. This legislation will be kept under review, but it is not evident that further controls, equivalent to the restrictions on marketing of calves, are needed for other categories of farm animal.
