§ Lord Hyltonasked Her Majesty's Government:
What information they have about recent attacks by the Iraqi Army on the civilian population of the 60WA Amara Marshes, using 30 mm and 120 mm phosphorus shells; and what action they propose to prevent such contraventions of UN Resolutions.
§ Baroness Chalker of WallaseyWe have seen reports from credible third-party sources that Iraqi Government forces fired phosphorus shells at com-munities in the southern marshes on 9th May. However we are unable to corroborate them.
There can be no question of relaxing the pressure on Iraq until it complies with all relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs). UNSCR 688 established a No Fly Zone in southern Iraq, and demanded that Iraq cease the repression of its own people. We unreservedly condemn the Iraqi regime's continued failure to comply with the terms of this resolution.
