HL Deb 06 June 1994 vol 555 c60WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What reports they have received of impending famine in Ethiopia, and what response they are making.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The World Food Programme estimate that Ethiopia will need 955,000 tonnes of food aid in 1994. Nine hundred thousand tonnes has already been pledged. Since January we have committed 25,000 tonnes of bilateral food aid, which will be delivered by the end of this month, and have made £3 million of non-food aid available.
