asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much the Department of Transport spent on research in 1992–93 and 1993–94 and what it expects to spend in 1994–95 and 1995–96 on engineering policy, road and vehicle safety, network management and maintenance, motorway tolling and Channel tunnel safety.

The table below gives details of research expenditure in the categories requested, for the three years 1992–93 to 1994–95. Expenditure on research into Channel tunnel safety is not separately identified. Total planned expenditure on research in 1995–96 is £38.8 million. The allocation of expenditure between programmes for 1995–96 has not yet been settled, pending the outcome of the 1994 Public Expenditure Survey.
