HL Deb 18 July 1994 vol 557 cc1-2WA
Viscount Montgomery of Alamein

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will clarify the meaning of "private affairs" of an individual in Clause 5 of the Deregulation and Contracting Out Bill.

Lord Strathclyde

I can clarify that, pursuant to the statement I made on 27 June,Official Report, col. 590, our intention is that "private affairs" in proposed new Section 56C(2) of the Fair Trading Act 1973, contained in Clause 5 of the Deregulation and Contracting Out Bill, would include an individual's business affairs, in so far as they had not been made public. The new section uses similar wording to Section 82(1) of the Fair Trading Act 1973, Section 16 of the Competition Act 1980 and Section 75H(2) and (4) of the Fair Trading; Act inserted by Section 147 of the Companies Act 1989.
