HC Deb 11 July 1994 vol 246 cc457-8W
Mr. Rowe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what is the average cost to the Exchequer of 11 years of compulsory education in local authority-maintained schools.

Mr. Robin Squire

In 1992–93, local education authorities spent an average of £1,857 per pupil in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools. LEA spending returns do not allow us to distinguish the amount spent on compulsory education from within that total.

Most central Government support for local authorities is in the form of unhypothecated revenue support grant. It is not therefore possible to identify the proportion of local authority education spending met by the Exchequer.
