To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his answer of 26 May,Official Report, column 306, what is the annual operating cost of the 17 regional road fuel testing units assigned to control the illegal use of hydrocarbon oil.

The latest figures available show that the annual operating cost of the regional road fuel testing units assigned to control the illegal use of hydrocarbon oil was some £1.6 million in the year ending 31 March 1993.

The numbers of vehicles tested by the regional road fuel units, and the numbers found to be running on illicit fuel, are:

Year ending 31 March 1992 fuel 84,614 tested and 1,594 on illicit
Year ending 31 March 1993 fuel 73,051 tested and 1,607 on illicit
Year ending 31 March 1994 fuel 66,259 tested and 1,682 on illicit
