HC Deb 28 January 1994 vol 236 c420W
1993. Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many hospitals there were in England in(a) 1992 and (b)

Mr. Sackville

The available information is shown in the table. Prior to April 1991, a count of the number of individual units supplying activity data provided an estimate of the number of hospitals. The creation of trusts and directly managed units means that from 1991–92 this information is no longer held centrally.

Number of providers submitting data for 1991–92 and 1992–93
1991–92 1992–93
Directly managed units 389 278
NHS trusts 53 141
Special health authorities 8 8
Total 450 427

Note: The count includes all providers who submitted data for wards open day and night, 24 hours, and/or wards open in the day only.
