§ Mr. Win GriffithsTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the prisons from which there have been escapes in each of the last five years; how many prisoners were involved in each escape; how long it was before they were recaptured; and what further offences, if any, were committed during the escape period.
§ Mr. Peter LloydResponsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.
Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Win Griffiths, dated 24 January 1994:
The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking for details of the prisons from which there have been escapes in each of the last five years; the number of prisoners involved in each escape; the period before recapture; and any further offences committed during the escape period.
I attach a table which lists the prisons from which prisoners have escaped, the number of prisoners involved and the number of escapees still unlawfully at large, as recorded by the Incident Management Support Unit.
The further offences committed by escaped prisoners is not recorded centrally, and the time spent unlawfully at large could only be calculated at disproportionate cost.
