§ Mr. Llew Smith
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer which Government Departments have had responsibility for Her Majesty's Customs and Excise Department since 1979.

§ Sir John Cope
Her Majesty's Customs and Excise is a separate Department of Government managed by commissioners appointed by the Queen. Treasury Ministers have, for the period from 1979—and long before —had responsibility for the Department.
