To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the Government's policy in relation to the preferred method for the charging for domestic water and sewerage services.

Mr. Atkins

The basis of charging is a matter for the water companies. We have said that in our view there is a case for selective use of meters chiefly in areas of significant potential water shortage.
