HC Deb 19 January 1994 vol 235 c624W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list by county the number of badgers shot and gassed in each year since 1988; and what percentage of those badgers were subsequently shown to have tuberculosis.

Mr. Redwood

The number of badgers killed, following trapping during state veterinary service badger removal operations, in Wales since 1988 is as follows:

Year Number of Badgers killed Number positive
1988 32 0
1989 5 0
1990 9 1
1991 22 0
1992
1993 10 0

The figures relate to the county of Dyfed. No badgers have been killed by the state veterinary service in any other county in Wales since 1988. The legal gassing of badgers ceased on 26 June 1982.
