§ Mr. ChisholmTo ask the President of the Board of Trade what is the Government's policy on the export of landmines.
§ Mr. Needham[holding answer 17 December 1993]: The Government supported the resolution of the United 240W Nations General Assembly urging a moratorium on the export of anti-personnel mines that pose grave dangers to civilian populations. Licences for the export of such mines will not be issued. We do not, however, consider that self-destructing or self-neutralising mines and mines used in accordance with protocol II of the 1981 weaponry convention pose such dangers. Applications for licences to export these forms of mine are subject to close scrutiny.
