To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the cost of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

The price of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner will depend on the technical specification required by the site purchasing the machine and negotiation with manufacturers before a contract is awarded.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many magnetic resonance imaging scanners are at present the property of the NHS;. and in which hospitals they are located.

According to information held by the Department, the number of magnetic resonance imaging scanners installed in national health service premises—up until June 1993—in England is 59.

These are located in the following hospitals: The Maudsley hospital, Newcastle general hospital, South Cleveland hospital, Hull royal infirmary, St. James's University hospital, Leeds, Leicester royal infirmary, Nottingham university hospital, Royal Hallamshire hospital, Derby royal infirmary, Addenbrooke's hospital, Hammersmith hospital, Northwick Park hospital, Mount Vernon hospital, Royal Brompton and National Heart hospital, St. Mary's hospital, Paddington, Royal Marsden hospital, Royal National Orthopaedic hospital, Middlesex hospital, St. Bartholomew's hospital, Royal Free hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The Hospital for Sick Children, London, the London hospital (Whitechapel), Royal Surrey County hospital, Atkinson Morley's hospital, St. George's hospital, Poole general hospital, Southampton general hospital, Stoke Mandeville hospital, John Radcliffe hospital, Nuffield orthopaedic centre, Royal Berkshire hospital, Bristol royal infirmary, Cheltenham general hospital, Royal Cornwall hospital, Frenchay hospital, Walsgrave general hospital, Royal Orthopaedic hospital, Birmingham, Liverpool MR research centre, Walton hospital, Liverpool, Clatterbridge Centre, Wirral, Manchester royal infirmary, Royal Preston hospital.

Some locations have more than one scanner.

Information about the ownership of these scanners is not available centrally.
