To ask the President of the Board of Trade what progress his Department has made towards the ratification of the chemical weapons convention.

§ Mr. Sainsbury
The United Kingdom signed the chemical weapons convention in January 1993. The Government continue to take a leading role in the preparatory commission which is working towards the establishment of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as envisaged by the chemical weapons convention—CWC. The DTI is working with the FCO and MoD to make preparations for the implementation of the CWC in the United Kingdom.
