Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give estimates of the number of vehicles travelling east to west along the A66 from Stockton to Darlington on(a) weekdays and (b) Saturdays and Sundays.

The average westbound traffic flows on the A66 in the vicinity of Elton and Longnewton are as follows:

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will direct his regional office not to divert traffic from the A66 through Elton during the week beginning 5 March.

I regret the inconvenience to my hon. Friend's constituents. Diversion through Elton is, on balance, the optimum solution and will go ahead as planned.
