§ Mr. WilsonTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what action he has taken to protect the viability of the British salmon farming industry.
§ Sir Hector MonroThe present imbalance between supply and demand for salmon on the European market is a source of concern both to the Government and salmon producers in this country. Over recent months the Government have worked energetically to find a means of resolving this complex problem. Most recently I have held constructive discussions with Mr. Jan Olsen, the Norwegian Fisheries Minister, when we agreed that the present difficulties ought to be addressed urgently by our respective industries. I hope that this initiative will lead to the reopening of an inter-industry dialogue aimed at correcting the present market imbalance and ensuring that steps are taken to prevent its recurrence in future.
