Mr. Key

The number of injury road accidents involving children since 1987 are as follows:

Number
1987 40,657
1988 41,430
1989 43,147
1990 43,620
1991 39,987
1992 39,340

Mrs. Golding

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much money his Department has spent on measures designed to prevent road accidents to children for each year since 1987.

Mr. Key

Many aspects of our road safety programme contribute to improving child road safety as well as that of other road users. In addition to measures such as cycle training or road safety education directed specifically at children, they also benefit from the construction of safer roads and vehicles and from improved driver behaviour. It is not, therefore, possible to calculate what proportion of the expenditure should be attributed to the prevention of road accidents to children.
