HC Deb 14 February 1994 vol 237 cc649-52W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the average total weekly earnings in(a) each travel-to-work area and (b) Great Britain as a whole in (i) cash and (ii) current prices for each of the last five years; and if he will make a statement.

Miss Widdecombe

Information by each travel-to-work area is not available. The following tables provide details of average earnings by area at April of each of the last five years. The information on the retail prices index, all items, at April, to convert 1989 figures to 1993 prices is published in table 6.4 of theEmployment Gazette and in table 26 of the annual supplement to "Economic Trends" for April of earlier years.

The majority of areas show a positive change in real earnings over the five-year period. Outside London and the south-east there is little evidence of any great disparity in earnings. Any differences that do exist result from the concentration of industries and occupations with relatively lower earnings in certain regions.

Average gross weekly earnings of full time adults—pay unaffected by absence: at April
