To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on security and public safety issues affecting the prison service.

The Prison Service aims to hold in secure custody those committed to it by the courts. A massive prison building programme has contributed to this in recent years. Six new prisons are planned. All will be built to modern security standards to ensure the safety of the public.
