HL Deb 07 February 1994 vol 551 cc108-9WA
Baroness Jeger

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What progress has been made towards a solution of the Cyprus problem; and what are the outstanding difficulties.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The package of Confidence Building Measures proposed by the UN Secretary-General and accepted by President Clerides in May 1993 have now been accepted in principle by Mr. Denktash.

We hope that this agreement can soon be followed up by UN-sponsored talks to secure the implementation of the package, which represents an important step towards an overall settlement. We fully and actively support the Secretary-General's efforts to make progress in this way.
