HC Deb 04 February 1994 vol 236 c992W
Mr. Sedgemore

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what he estimates was the value of goods taken by VAT officers from the Bass Clef jazz club in Hoxton square, Hackney N1, on 28 January; whose property it was that was taken; for what reason it was taken; and if he will make a statement.

Sir John Cope

[holding answer 3 February 1994]: It would be inappropriate for me to make public the tax affairs of a particular company. In general, removal of goods under regulation 65 of the VAT (General) Regulations 1985 is seen by customs as a last resort. However, it considers that such action is necessary when businesses refuse to pay VAT debts and the debts continue to increase.
