HC Deb 20 December 1994 vol 251 c1180W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will place in the Library an analysis of how the figures in "Defence Statistics 1994", table 1.10, for employment dependence on defence exports were derived; and if he will estimate for the years stated dependence on military aerospace exports.

Equivalent figures for the earlier years are not available.

Mr. Freeman

Defence statistics bulletin No. 3 explains the methodology used to prepare the employment estimates published in table 1.10 of "UK Defence Statistics 1994". Copies of the bulletin were placed in the Library at the time.

Figures for UK employment dependent on defence aerospace equipment exports for the years 1987–88 to 1992–93 are as follows:

North-East (Mr. Butler) on 29 November 1994, Official Report, column 621.

Feasibility studies are now under way into the possibility of fitting our submarines with conventionally armed Tomahawk land missiles; results from these studies are expected in the spring and a decision on procurement will be taken in the light of those findings.
