To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total figure for the financial balances held by all(a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools.

The information sought is not held centrally. Nor will such information be available generally until devolved school management—DSM—arrangements are fully in place. The target date for final implementation of the DSM arrangements in Scottish schools is April 1998.
