Sir David Knox

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much was spent per pupil in primary schools in Scotland in the most recent year for which figures are available; and what the figure was in 1978–79, at constant prices.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Current expenditure per primary pupil in 1992–93 was 62 per cent. higher in real terms than in 1979. The latest figure is £1,766 per primary pupil.

New information on budgeted school running costs per pupil for 1994–95, for individual primary and secondary schools in Scotland, will be published next week.
