HC Deb 26 April 1994 vol 242 c106W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what procedures are in place to prevent waste water from purification procedures which is discharged into fresh water rivers being used for drinking supplies.

Mr. Atkins

The National Rivers Authority is responsible for setting standards for discharges into rivers, including those from waste water or sewage treatment works. In doing so, the NRA has to have regard to downstream uses of the river, including any cases where water is abstracted for treatment as drinking water.
